Mrs Aimee Nolte it probably has a 1/4connection for the sustain pedal on the back panel. Just thought you like To know 😅
You guys sound REALLY GOOD!!!Live It .GREAT SINGING Amiee
In 1979 every band that was shooting for a record deal wanted a CP 80 because they thought it made them look cool on stage.
Hey Aimee! I keep coming back to this video. I wish you did more of these!
Aimee has the most soothing voice on the internet. Come for the lesson, stay just to hear her talk.
Bought.
😳
Let me know what you think! I’d say you made a good call.
Obviously you're OK with the smaller keyboard. Do you think others will be similarly OK?
Well Ken…..I DONT KNOW. Hahaha I like the simplicity and the challenge and the limitations and the way it forces me to be creative and all that stuff. I can’t speak for the masses but if you read the comments you’ll see that some people DO have a problem with small keys😄🙌🏼
The big issue with the Reface keyboards was Yamaha sat on them long enough to the point small format synths became affordable then people didn't really feel like paying 500+ bucks on a keyboard which only did one thing. Then they didn't sell well and Yamaha had to use many of their parts on the YC line to at least recoup some of the investment they made.
You'll want that toy piano sound if you want to play "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts.
This is totally awesome! Talk about being efficient! (and I thought playing my Hammond SK1 61 key keyboard was hard 🤣 when I usually play 88 note boards. 👏👏
It runs on batteries an has inbuilt speakers so you can jam anywhere! Busking comes to mind- I have seen "Barry Morgan" busk using the YC reface.
Yamaha should know you exist. 😊
try the toy piano sound with octave all the way down, about 50-75% distortion, and reverb up high. Sounds like tubular bells! add some chorus and it can be trippy.
Cool.
Aimee, you make this little Reface earn its keep! Nice work, and great that you found such a workable solution within your requirements. I was going to mention the CK61 (ORGANS! PIANOS!) but I see that others have already done so. I haven't got my hands on one yet, but plan to, for similar reasons to yours: I don't want to lug around my SV-1 anymore! Just one more idea to throw out there: I bought myself a little Casio (I know) CT-S1 about two years ago, as my "BBQ / Tailgate" keyboard, and it's great for that! Will run on AA batteries for hours. AND it has a patch that splits the keyboard: Grand piano on top, Upright Bass on the bottom. I have used it - with that patch - in a duet situation like yours, and the Upright bass sound is pretty impressive. 9.9 pounds, 61 keys. Oh, and $200.
Rad! Thx for all the good info
So how many octaves is this piece? Thank you.
ehx b9 effects box will get you b3. expensive though.
Aimee - try a Yamaha CK61. So light but the sound engine has the organ (with draw bars) and all the EP and piano patches and effects. Bag is a backpack. You could play on your lap too or small table. Full size keys. Its my fav Yamaha keyboard. Speakers and battery powered. Easy to travel. You would love it.
I love mine too. In fact, I love all of my reface keyboards.
Omg I could listen to you for hours I think I just fell in love with a cool sexy musical genius who makes me laugh
Bought a Reface CP a couple of years back. Best musical purchase I have ever made!
I have the CS and it works so well for small gigs that require synths
Great mini-review and great playing! Can always rely on Yamaha to make great instruments. I like Roland and Korg's stuff, too! Japanese quality, hahah!
As is, this seems to be a great fly rig for air travel. The first keyboard I actually started to learn on was the $100 budget version of the Reface.. same keybed but the sounds are not as good. I still have that. I like the comments about the CK61 for the same sounds as this CP? Can anyone confirm that the CK61 has the same sounds as this Reface CP and the organ version?? Thanks very much. In any case, thank you so much Aimee! Great video!!!
Hi, I have and use both and do confirm !.. same for effects as well. Cheers
I would recommend another Yamaha product, if it's still on the market. Portable Grand NP-30! 76 keys. It has a piano button, to return to the first of two piano sounds. You can use two sounds at the same time. The two piano sounds play in octaves when used simultaneously. Weight 4.6 kg. About 9 pounds. It fits in a Casio bag with shoulder straps (sorry, I don't know the model number, if in fact it has been designated any such number). With the bag, cables etc., it ways about 10 kg at the most (about 21 pounds). It doesn't have any effects, though. But I would carry a tiny tablet with some software, or may an old hardware effect unit, weighing in at a few ounces (?)... It has ten sounds, of which I only use the pianos and maybe combo piano and EP - look it up if you want to know more, just copy and paste this: "Yamaha Portable Grand NP-30" . It does need a stand. But it takes me about five to ten minutes to set it up and connect it to an amp. So I carry the dang thang on my bag in the Casio bag, whilst holding the stand in one hand, like I need a coffee in the other. I can even carry it on a bicycle, if I can work out how to strap the stand on the side of the bicycle, I suppose with two elastic thingies or even some spinach or asparagus...
I have one and it is great ❤
Absolutely fabulous gifts! With your skill set, you could help sell the old toy psr keyboards! Great video!
The secret Grand Piano sound is pretty useful too. Turn it off, set the knob halfway between Toy and CP (takes a bit of balancing, but it will stay there) then turn it on. Works with the FX, is a pretty decent Yamaha sounding piano, and it's great for comping, though you do have to turn the unit off to get back to it if you switch out. There's a mod you can do to add a switch, but it still requires the unit to be turned off.
I can't belive that Yamaha has, still, no connection with you..? After all those best legacy country-jazz-blues music samples you played; the genres in which Yamaha has introduced some legendary instruments in 60s,70s,80s... Coming to the tiny keyboard, it sounds soo cool; because "you" are playing it! Definetely a professional's item, I can feel the versatility and usefulness of it. [Btw, afaics, they are quite inclined on "digital" equipments (much broader market to sell) compared to acoustical ones might be the reason of their ignorance]
Rachel K. Collier used to use Reface KBs quite a bit. I think she endorses Roland now. You seem to get around on that little KB really well! My fave controller is a CME 2 octave...it is just a controller but it is really amazing!
I wish they'd put the toy piano on the 'extra' setting instead of the more usable acoustic piano.
Where do you play your piano gigs in Los Angeles or the Orange County area?
Both. Just depends. San diego county a lot as well. You can always check the gig tab on my website.
I can see how much fun you have being challenged to work within the limited range of the keyboard, and yes, how nice to not have to lug all that gear back and forth to the gig. Beautiful "authentic" singing, as always.
That’s definitely part of it, Dan! It’s fun to put limitations on yourself because it makes you find more creativity!
The RefaceCP is a beast! Even if you don't love the mini keys, using it as a sound module fed by a full-sized MIDI keyboard is totally an option! It sounds so good, and the built-in effects are paired nicely. Did anyone tell you about the hidden Grande Piano mode? If you set the instrument selector knob in between the detents and then power it up it gives you the bonus instrument! Edit: Oh duh! @5:10 that's my style... commenting before watching the whole vid!
🤔
Love all the refaces. The DX is fun also. But the CP is the best.
I had a reface CP for a few years. An absolute joy to play. Kind of regret selling it - might have to get it again. Would love to see Yamaha continue to evolve this series.
I wish they’d make the “secret piano” easier to access!
I dare say that a great part of your success in utilizing this keyboard in a gigging situation is more due to your talent, knowledge and experience than the feature set of the keyboard as impressive as they may be (i really like the organ reface). You said you missed having an organ. Have you looked at the Yamaha CK-61? It is more expensive, but you get more keys that would eliminate having to switch octaves. It has a lot more sounds, and you can make live sets with the ability to use 3 sounds at once. These sounds can be layered and split across the keyboards. This keyboard features an organ with 9 drawbars like a Hammond with a Leslie speaker with all the speed control. You can also turn off the Leslie effect for the straight jazz organ sound. This keyboard also features speakers, on-board effects, minimal menu diving, and it can be battery powered. And since you don't want to mesa around with a heavy keyboard setup, this keyboard weighs in at a whopping 12lbs. Another option might be to bring your Hydra keyboard to use for basses, leads, and organ sounds. Anyway, just a couple of thoughts. Great video! It is especially cool uses such a minimal setup to great effect.
I bought one of these a few months ago because I wasn’t totally happy with the Wurlie, clav or Rhodes sounds on my other keyboards. I mainly use it as a MIDI module connected to my semi weighted keyboards. It’s worth mentioning that the CP has 128 note polyphony! So no voice stealing. Besides, you don’t have to solder and file to keep it in tune, unlike a real Wurlitzer. On my unit it is very hard to park the selector switch in between the preset positions. It feels spring loaded, like a “normal” pitch bend wheel. I eventually found one position between Rd I and II where the pot stays in place. But I wouldn’t trust that on a live gig. Vibrations may cause the pot to move and change the preset. It is, however, possible to “physically” modify the unit. It requires technical skills and some soldering. Thus voiding the warranty! There’s an embedded video on the subject on Reddit. “Yamaha Reface CP Acoustic Piano Sound - Switch Mod” Perhaps there’s an easier and less invasive way to do this if you put your mind to it. Excellent performances, Nebula rules! I even sang along to Walking On The Moon and Bring It On Home, a version worthy of the Sam Cook legacy (your parts). By the way, our voices sounded great together😉 Best breakfast in a very long time. ✌𝄆❤❤❤𝄇✌
I have the reface CP and was thrilled when I found out that is also has a great grand piano sound in it, which Yamaha unfortunately has not put controls on the surface to select - but it's in there. Maybe they designed it with a real acoustic piano, but decided at the last minute not to release - so they left the controls out. I modified my reface CP to add a switch to select the piano. It's great.
I'd suggest something a bit larger
I have one of these and it's my go-to for recording keyboards. (I'm not much of a keyboardist.) I agree about the silly toy piano and how it's annoying that the regular acoustic piano is an Easter egg. My best guess as to the reason is that someone in the Yamaha hierarchy didn't think it sounded enough like a real acoustic piano so they demanded it be removed, but the designers threw it in with this secret mode. I don't know… it's the only explanation that makes any sense to me!
Yamaha should be really pleased with this video. They should just send you a catalog and tell you to circle anything you want! This video probably doubled their sales! Thanks.
Love your videos keep on 😎
at last on tube shorts. love you
And if you want full size keys you can midi to almost any controller
The secret sound was officially explained by Yamaha as an in-factory test voice.
Hey. ReFace is good. but why on earth haven't you checked out Yamaha YC61. 7 kg supersolid allround keyboard with really good organ and leslie-sound.
I’ve been really happy with my Korg SV-1 when I need a full keyboard
If it is good for Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez Band ruclips.net/video/gUMhQ8aeaEQ/видео.html then it is good for everybody!
there are a handful of basic instruments patches id like to add to it... just for more general flexibility, but these things are delicious.. and the limitations really are one of the things i wanted from it too. if i could id add some sounds it wouldnt be anything fancy.. just a nice vibraphone, some strings, and perhaps something moogy or organy. looks like a toy, definitely doesnt feel or sound like one. Also... when i learned about the hidden piano instrument.. i opened it up and did the simplest of mods (removing one connection) and then you can access the sound more readily without the 'slightly scary...between notches' setting on the dial
